TEACHING Practicums
Foundations OF BiologyIn my teaching practicum for Foundations of Biology, I worked closely with the instructor in a flipped classroom setting to encourage student driven discovery of the material. After interacting with the students and aiding them with their self-discovery for 4 weeks using the instructors material, I led two 90 minute sessions focused on understanding molecular evolution. In these sessions, I gave students a framework of molecular evolution then introduced activities that would further understanding. We then tied the claims that they made through their own testing, observation, and analyses to evidence that experts have found that relate closely to their claims.

The concepts of active learning and teaching science the way science is practiced make sense in theory; however it is often difficult to encourage students to learn in scientific ways while still meeting curriculum requirements. This course helps K-12 teachers to embrace teaching science using the scientific method and gives them tools to engage the minds of the young scientists in their classroom while ensuring that they are meeting Next Generation Science Standards. In addition to aiding in this course weekly, I will also be leading a discussion that will focus on how to keep students engage in active classrooms and how to handle student resentment towards a new learning style. See the beginnings a Fundamental Genetics course that implements some of these ideas here, just click on anything that is underlined to explore the idea a little more!
